Diane Hopkins-Hughs was born in Arizona,
lived early childhood in Louisiana, and high school and college
years in Texas. She received a BFA from the University of Texas
and MS from Indiana University. Starting out as a painter, she
discovered photography while living in Europe and returned to the
US to study with Henry Holmes Smith at Indiana University. She
has attended workshops with Brett Weston, Ansel Adams, Paul Caponigro
and George Tice. She has lived in Costa Rica, Germany, Italy, Georgia,
and moved to South Carolina in 1988.
Experience: Teaching at Southern Methodist University (Dallas,
TX); Schreiner University (Kerrville, TX); Brenau University
(Gainesville, GA); Furman University (Greenville, SC); presenting
over 60 workshops in Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Exhibitions: More than 50 solo exhibitions including: Amon Carter
Museum (Fort Worth, TX); Furman University, Tyler Museum (Tyler,
TX); South Carolina Center for Photography; University of Oregon;
Middle Tennessee State University; University of South Carolina
(Spartanburg, SC); and Southern Methodist University.
More than 150 group exhibitions (national competitions and invitationals) throughout
the country.
Collections: Numerous public and private collections including
Amon Carter Museum (Forth Worth, TX); McAllen International Museum
(McAllen, TX); Permian Basin Oil Museum (Midland, TX); Columbus
Museum of Art (Columbus, GA); Holiday Inn; The State of Georgia;
Sterling Pharmaceutical; Georgia Council for the Arts; Alabama
Power; and South Carolina State Art Collection.
Grants: Visual Arts Fellow, South Carolina Arts Commission 2002-2003;
