| Wilma Beakes Skarda was born into a family
where everyone was drawing and painting from toddler-time on. Many
Gainesvillians will remember Wilma’s sister, the late Mary
Lynch, was a very active part of the art world of Gainesville.
Wilma earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wittenberg University
in Springfield, Ohio, where her early mentor was Professor Charles
Thompson. Upon graduation, Wilma taught art in the public schools
of Ohio and Illinois for nine years.
Coming to Gainesville in 1959, she became an active member of
the Painting Group of the Quinlan and supplied many paintings to
the Roving Gallery.
In 1976 she earned a Masters of Arts degree from Georgia State
University and worked in Program Management for Johnson and Johnson.
Many fine teachers at the Quinlan, the Duckett Mill Gallery, and
Atlanta Galleries have provided inspiration through the years,
including: Joe Perrin, Tony Couch, Gail Novak, Jack Shields, Lala
Streett, Judy Jarrett, Carol Mann, Larry King, Joe Robinson, Jim
Chapman, Cher Thompson, and many others.
Overall, Wilma appreciates the inspiration of others, but seeks
to develop her original way of expressing herself in watercolor,
oils, acrylics, and mixed media.
