Charles, a Connecticut native, grew
up in a family of artists including a grandfather whose work now
hangs in the National Gallery, and a cousin whose work is in the
New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Charles began drawing in early
childhood. He received four years of formal training in various
art media at the Paier School of Art in Hamden, Connecticut, and
two additional years of instruction in painting and sculpting at
the Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He has worked
professionally as a landscape painter for over twenty years.
His commissioned works have been created at such diverse locations
as Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Burlington, Vermont; Saratoga Springs,
New York; The Meadowlands in New Jersey; the New York Stock Exchange
and NYNEX; the Calvin Klein house in Key West, Florida; and the
Grand Floridian Hotel in Orlando, Florida. His paintings have
been purchased by IBM, United Technologies, Lenders Bakery, Hallmark,
Flagler College, St. Augustine branch of the Bank of America,
and by numerous private collectors including the former director
of the Jacksonville Art Museum.
Charles has worked as a painting instructor at North Hollow
School in Rochester, Vermont (1988-89) and the Johnson College
External Degree Program in Johnson, Vermont (1989). He has given
painting demonstrations at various art leagues around the country.
He is a member, and award winner, of the St. Augustine Art Association
and the North Florida Artists Alliance.
Charles has been painting in Florida and Vermont for many years
where the contrasting locations provide different and challenging
choices for subject matter.
Charles’ artistic aim is to continue to create paintings
capturing the spirit and beauty of the variety of landscapes
around us.
